Mengyi Liu is an NYC-based scenic designer. She is from Sichuan, China. After her 5-year work in finance, she finally found her true passion in theatre design and started to pursue her dream. She currently graduated with her M.F.A. Scenic Design degree from Carnegie Mellon University, School of Drama. During school years she designed Soldier Songs for Pittsburgh Opera, End Future Now for Philip Chosky Theater, and Treasure Island in CMU Frame Gallery. After graduation she moved to New York and designed Frankenstein for UNIS, Fun and Games at Theater for the New City, Girl with the Red Hair at Gene Frankel Theater. In addition to her scenic design experience, Mengyi also does paintings, model making, and mini-films.
Mengyi sees theater as a container, for ideas that we cannot or dare not touch in reality, that gives strength and support to the people who express them on stage. Theater is an alternative universe for Mengyi, the last thing she would give up in her life. Mengyi's duty as a scenic designer is to create a container that supports performance to the fullest.
